Ramblings and Week to Come 15SEP13

Sports:
My softball team sustained ANOTHER loss, making us 0-3 :( The bummer is that we had four really good innings (including an amazing double play by our shortstop; as 2B, I had a great view of that). Unfortunately those four innings came after two absolutely awful innings where the other team scored most of their runs. Still I remain hopeful that we will eventually win a game. My dad agreed to help me practice catching grounders and I checked out some books from the library about softball basics in order to improve my own abilities (who's a nerd? This girl! Because if you can't learn it from books, is it really worth learning?)

Meanwhile in the professional world, Manchester United notched their second win (which is great as my boss had teased me after their draw-he's a City fan). Today my Eagles are hosting the Chargers and I'm hoping for a second win. Honestly I would be happy if the Eagles went 5-11 (though the optimist in me is hoping for 8-8) since we were 4-12 last season.

Shopping:
Yesterday was very fun as my mom and I hit an awesome mall a bit away from us. We visited Loft, The Limited, and J. Crew, among others, where I got some great things (and nudged her to start preparing for my birthday :) This mall also has a Cheesecake Factory so I got a delicious piece of chocolate mousse cheesecake-yummy!

Blogging:
Last week was crazy-I basically read the entire book and wrote my review the night before it went live. I'm used to being about two days ahead (when I first started my blog, I was up to a month ahead! The beauties of college compared to working full-time.) Then you all keep writing amazing discussion posts and reviews and I want to comment on all of them but struggle to fit it in. Does anyone comment through their phone? What do you use? I would definitely be able to comment a bit more if I could go through my phone.

Week to Come:
The above is a screenshot from my Netgalley shelf, showing four of the books up for review this week.

We're starting with The F-It List by Julie Halpern-its provocative title first drew my attention. Then we move to Chasing Shadows by Swati Avasthi, an intriguing blend of words with illustration in the form of graphic novel. For Wednesday, it is Promise Me Something by Sara Kocek, which I have not started yet but appears to be contemporary.

The Edge of Normal by Carla Norton looks very intense-I hope I know what I'm getting into! Friday's read is also intense: Not a Drop to Drink by Mindy McGinnis. I've read quite a few reviews mentioning its dark premise and powerful writing. We'll end on The Impersonator by Mary Miley, which sounds very lively.

And that's the week! How is your reading going?

  2. I look forward to reading your thoughts on Not a Drop to Drink. I loved Into the Wild Nerd Yonder but haven't read anything else by Julie Halpern yet. That title will certainly grab teens' attention I think.

Sorry that your softball season isn't going as you'd hoped but it is a great idea to use your library to get tips! I am not athletic at all but if I was, I'd probably do the same thing. My library even has softball (and other sports) DVDs for people to improve their game.

I am impressed that you are able to review as much as you do. I have been pushing myself to try harder lately. I read quickly but it takes me awhile to write depending on the book. I find it is easier to write reviews for books I really feel strongly about as opposed to books that don't inspire strong feelings one way or the other.

    1. I enjoyed Into the Wild Nerd Yonder too but I think I liked The F- It List more despite its more profane content.

I skimmed the books but found them kind of boring-I need to talk it over with someone I think.

I'm not sure how sustainable this reviewing is but I'm trying to keep it going for now and maybe to ease back during busier times. I write better when I feel strongly too-it's like the words just flow. However if the words aren't coming, I'll write the best brief review I can and call it a night.

    1. It was so yummy! I like that it's a sporadic treat instead of something I'm used to.

  4. I too struggle with commenting because I am rarely at home anymore. I commute to university so I have been trying to comment on my ipad but sometimes it doesn't go through. So frustrating! As for the last minute reviewing, I do that all the time LOL. Especially for book tours, it's an awful habit to have!

    1. I really want to review on my phone but haven't found any solution that works for me. I can read posts but commenting is difficult.

    1. Going shopping with my mom is definitely one of my favorite things so it was really a high point for the weekend. Thankfully everyone has a pretty good attitude about the losing so we'll still show up and give it our best effort in the weeks to come.

  7. I'm actually going to the Cheesecake Factory with my mom this Wednesday. I'm excited!! Looks like you have some great books coming up this week. I'm trying to schedule in advance at the moment too just to hopefully keep up with things.

  8. Sorry about softball! I'm rooting for you :) And I'm really curious about the F it list. This hasn't been a good week for me in reading, but hopefully the upcoming week is better for me!

  9. Yes I comment using my phone sometimes. I don't use a specific anything, just the normal internet browser that is on the phone. It works well enough. Yes working full time is a huge hamper on free time / blogging / reading!!

    1. Hmm...I will have to try that. I'm just flooded in great posts and I can't comment as much as I want to and still do the other things I want to do.

  10. Oh, Chasing Shadows sounds interesting to me--her previous book got such great reviews among friends, but I still haven't read it yet! Look like you have a busy week up ahead. ;)

  11. Sorry about your losses!
I have written posts only hours before they go up. I don't like to do that, but sometimes that's what happens.
And I do comment on my phone, but it's a lot harder. I'm behind on comments too :)

  13. I love hearing about your softball updates. I miss those days so much. I'm sorry to hear about your losses but I hope you are still having fun playing. It was always fun to bond with my dad over the sport even if we were losing.

    1. Glad someone likes reading about them! I write because I know the people in my real life are a bit sick of hearing about it and yet I still want to share :)
