Magic Under Glass

Magic Under Glass by Jaclyn Dolamore
Bloomsbury, 2010
225 pages
YA; Fantasy
3.5/5 stars

Source: Library

I first heard about this book when its whitewashed cover was called out by various book bloggers.  This put it on my radar but I didn't have a chance to get to it until now.

I thought the description sounded cool with Nimira, the trouser girl who dances with an automaton piano player only to discover a deeper world of magic and fairies.  But everything felt very surface level.  I wanted more of everything...more of Nimira who seemed like a curious, independent girl; more about the magic underpinning their world; more about the possible impending war with the fairies that is mentioned; and more of the other characters present.

I liked the short length, because I find it fun to mix it up book lengths and I just finished a longer book but the disadvantage of shorter books is that the reader often craves more.  There is room for a sequel and it looks like one will be published but I was dissatisfied with what was offered here so that sequel better be meatier in order to keep me engaged.

  1. I agree, I wanted more too. I really liked the premise, but I wanted just a little more depth to everyone. Hollin was my favorite, so I hope we get to see more of him in the sequel.

  3. Firstly, sorry for my absence. I was away for the week, so I failed to comment on your reviews. I will catch up on them in the following days.

Secondly, I really like the sound of this novel and I can see that the cover is lovely and mysterious, but too bad the story lacks depth. However, I'm not saying no to this book. Fairy-tale like fantasy books are my thing.

  4. @Small Review-I think my favorite character was Erris but I really want to know more about everyone!

@Rachel Brooks-I think you should definitely give it a shot but it just may leave you wanting more.

@Irena-I missed your reviews this week-I hope you had a nice break and got plenty of reading done. What was there was good, there was just potential for more.
