Q. "Let’s talk crazy book titles! Highlight one or two (or as many as you like!) titles in your personal collection that have the most interesting titles! If you can’t find any, feel free to find one on the internet!"

A. I think The Implosion of Aggie Winchester by Lara Zielin is kind of a crazy title; the name is wacky and "implosion" is just a fun word. I doubt I've seen any other title that includes it.  This is one question where I'm really looking forward to the other answers.

Q. "How have your reading habits changed since you were a teen?"

A. Interestingly I think I read more YA now than I did when I was a teen!  I'm also now less interested in mysteries than I used to be, except for the rare YA mystery.  Additionally because I became a Christian when I was 18, my reading now is more interested in religion in general than my younger self.

Q. "Name 3 authors who you would love to sit down and spend an hour or a meal with just talking about either their books or get advice on writing from."

A. That's a tough one. I know that I would pick Jane Austen, hands down as she is my favorite author of all time. I would also probably pick Meg Cabot, a long-time favorite of mine, and Jude Morgan, who's written some amazing Austen-esque fiction.

Q. "What’s the ONE GENRE that you wish you could get into, but just can’t?"

I'm not the biggest fan of epic fantasy-in my experience, there are loads of male characters but not many female characters (and the ones who are there are love/lust interests and don't really get to do anything) and the names don't have a good vowel to consonant ratio. Consequently I have no idea how to pronounce the names and that frustrates me. However I do love fantasy based on fairy tales and books with fantastical subjects.

Q. "What do I do when I am not reading?"

I love TV [Burn Notice and White Collar!] and movies although I can read during if I want.  I also love puzzles, playing the viola, and I spend quite a bit of time on facebook...although I should be curbing that.

Q: "How/Where do you get your books? Do you buy them or go to the library? Is there a certain website you use like paperbackswap?"

I am a huge library fan and am very fortunate to have a great library with staff who order the books I request.  I also get a lot of books from Netgalley and GalleyGrab. I do still buy books but usually only after I've read and loved them.

I mostly review YA but I also read mystery, romance, historical, classics, and fantasy. Recent reviews include:  The Iron Thorn by Caitlin Kittredge, Awaken by Katie Kacvinsky, Between Here and Forever by Elizabeth Scott, Sean Griswold's Head by Lindsey Leavitt, The Thin Executioner by Darren Shan, and Keturah and Lord Death by Martine Leavitt.

Q. How many books do you read in a week? And in what format do you read them, or listen to them?

I guess 8-9 books a week; split about 50/50 between hard copies and ebooks. Only very rarely do I listen to an audiobook: maybe 6 a year.

Q: "What book-to-movie adaptation have you most liked?  Which have you disliked?"

The adaptations that spring to mind first are the Harry Potter, of which the third is my favorite while the sixth is probably my least favorite (why was the Burrow destroyed?!)

I also think the LOTR films were fantastic and I loved Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.  A controversial choice is Ella Enchanted, which bears little resemblance to its book but introduced me to Hugh Dancy and thus is one I liked.

List 5 Quirky Facts About You:
1. In general, I don't like my food to touch and I usually eat all of one food on my plate before moving on to another.  Like for my last dinner, I ate all of my corn on the cob, then my hamburger, then my rice a roni, and lastly my salad.
2. I prefer even numbers to odd, for example leaving the volume of the TV on an even number.
3. I have a Theodore Roosevelt bobblehead. It is awesome.
4. I'll check my watch two or three times in a row just to make sure that I really read it right.
5. I can't take a nap after 3 or else I can't sleep at night. I hope to someday be like my mom who will sleep for twenty minutes at 9 and then go to bed at 11 like it's nothing.

"If you were given the chance to spend one day in a fictional world (from a book), which book would it be from and what would that book be?"

The obvious first answer is Harry Potter's magical world at Hogwarts but I'm not sure that is in fact my number one choice. I'm kind of interested in the world of Paranormalcy by Kiersten White but I think I will choose the BookWorld of Jasper Fforde's Thursday Next series.  Surrounded by books and getting to meet ALL of my favorite characters would rock.

Library Hop on 4/21

I'm feeling kind of lazy here so I'm not going to type up all of the titles but this picture shows 13 of the titles on the YA Overlooked Book Battle List at The Shady Glade.  As a round 1 judge, I am hoping to read as many of these as possible by the end of April.  I've really enjoyed what I've read so far so I'm excited about this batch too.  Next up is probably The Rise of Renegade X by Chelsea M. Campbell and then Whale Talk by Chris Crutcher but I'll see what appeals to me the most.

How did you come up with your blog name?

Obviously I wanted it to have something to do with books and I really liked Bookworm plus I didn't like any of my previous online identities so I really wanted to think of one I did like.  Then I hit on the idea of relating it to my favorite president (and voracious reader) Theodore Roosevelt so I picked his birth year and combined them.

 Do you read only one book at a time, or do you have several going at once?

 

 I usually read two at a time but they have to be quite different.  For example I was reading a cozy mystery and a YA horror novel yesterday (have since finished the cozy) and that was fine.  But I could never read, say, two Agatha Christies at the same time.  It especially helps when one is a hard-copy and the other is on my Nook because the reading experience is different and that helps to keep it additionally straight in my head.

Who's your all-time favorite book villain?

None are immediately springing to mind so I'm going to go with Lord Voldemort-he was especially terrifying to me in Goblet of Fire and I use to have nightmares that he had already killed my entire family and was attempting to kill me.

Share your current fav television show! Tell us a bit about it...

I'm a sitcom girl because I love to laugh.  Current faves are Community and Parks and Recreation NBC, Thursdays, The Middle on ABC, Wednesdays, and my longtime standard The Simpsons, FOX, Sundays, a show that I have literally grown up with.  Except for The Middle, all of these shows are on hulu so US residents should give them a shot when they're looking for a laugh!

Do you ever wish you would have named your blog something different?

 No, I'm pretty happy with my title.  Sometimes I wish it had been Bookworm1858's Shelf or Bookworm1858 Reviews YA or something more specific but I'm overall pleased with it.

Edited to Add: Many have asked about the 1858; it's the birth year of Theodore Roosevelt, one of the most inspirational people to me and a voracious reader (he'd read one to three books a day in addition to his physical activities, time with family, and presidential work).

So I am super lucky because while my college's library is kind of lame (being an academic library, it doesn't really have any YA, except for Revolution by Jennifer Connelly and Lauren Conrad's books, nor does it have much fun genre fiction; it does however have loads of useful research material) BUT I can request books from loads of other libraries which is how I get most of my reading material.

Now that is a pretty good list of fairly recent titles plus some older ones that I missed.  I also get the books for three weeks with the option to renew if necessary.  It is a good system and I estimate that at least one-third of the books I've read while in college come through this system.

What is/was your favorite subject in school?

While I am a history major, I've recently been thinking that I almost always preferred math except for my year of calculus; algebra I & II, geometry, pre-calc, and statistics were some of the best classes I ever took.  However I also realize that I loved them so much because I had amazing teachers-that certainly makes a big difference!

What book are you most looking forward to seeing published in 2011? Why are you anticipating that book?

 Super easy-Wither by Lauren DeStefano.  Because I'm kind of shallow that way, I'm anticipating it solely because of the cover-one of the most beautiful covers I've ever seen.

I'm also looking forward to the new Elizabeth Scotts, Sarah Dessen, and loads of other YA.

"What is the thing you like most about reading book blogs? Is it the reviews, author guest posts, articles, giveaways, or something else entirely?"

I like reading reviews but usually of books that I've read already; I feel more equipped to contribute to the conversation that way.  I usually skip author guest posts unless a giveaway is attached-sorry!  And of course I like giveaways, because we all love free books, but I think my favorite part of book blogs is the meme "Waiting on Wednesday" because it adds so many books to my wish-list.  Of course I also get titles just from the reviews that people do so I also like when people review older books so I don't end up with five (or ten) reviews of the same book on the same day-then I usually don't read any.

"Do you have an under-noticed author that you think we should all know about?"


Well, I mostly follow American YA blogs but I think Jude Morgan who is British and writes adult literary novels is supremely under-noticed.  My personal favorite is Indiscretion, which is the best Jane Austen-esque novel I've ever read but I've also read and enjoyed An Accomplished Woman, Symphony, and Charlotte and Emily/A Taste of Sorrow (US/UK title).  I also own Passion but I haven't read it yet.  Additionally there is The King's Touch and A Little Folly.  If you like Jane Austen, I think you would like Morgan.

"What very popular and hyped book in the blogosphere did you NOT enjoy and how did you feel about posting your review?"

I'm trying to think of one-I usually don't read the most hyped books right away.  I know that I did not like the first book in the Lady Julia series by Deanna Raybourn but I loved the first two Lady Emily books by Tasha Alexander.  Most bloggers I've seen prefer Lady Julia (and Brisbane) but I found them much less enjoyable.  It made me feel like I was missing something for not agreeing with those bloggers but I wasn't worried about my reviews or how people would take them.

"What do you do besides reading/reviewing as a hobby?"

Well reading really is my main hobby because outside of schoolwork that's about all I have time for.  But I also play viola in an orchestra, I love puzzles (jigsaw, crosswords, and sudoku being my favorites), and I love watching TV and movies.
